The potatoes suffered a set back with an insect called a leafhopper. They were also the culprits of ending the peas sooner than normal. They came early and with a vengeance. The little critters like to suck the juices out of the plant. Because of this, the potato leaves were not able to give enough nutrients to the potatoes. We still have lots of potatoes, but the yield is much lower than in my previous experience of growing them.
The leeks are growing well. I have 100 feet planted of an overwintering variety. I am hoping it will work, so there will be fresh leeks to harvest in early spring. We also have leeks that will be ready this fall. The onions had quite a lot of difficulty this spring with those nasty cutworms eating them in half, but with all the trouble they caused, we will still have a nice crop of onions. (Please refer back to the nun comment.)
I want to mention the lettuce. The heat has slowed the growth down a lot. I even have a mid-summer lettuce, Anuenue, planted out right now from Hawaii (means rainbow), and it's suffering. I am hoping it will be ready to harvest in the next couple of weeks. I am confident though, that the new batch of arugula, will be filling share bags next week. It looks great!!
All the fall seeds have been started in the greenhouse. Please feel free to stop in and read the labels to see what is in store for this fall.
